Master of Arts and Education Coursework
Here you will find a reflection of my coursework experiences and work samples, beginning with my internship year, area of concentration and elective courses. During my time in the MAED program I have completed 30-semester credit and chose the concentration area of special education with elective courses in technology and learning.

TE 802 Reflections and Inquiry in Teaching Practice !
Instructor: G. Garner
This course was part of the teaching internship year at Michigan State University. The focus was to examine and reflect upon my teaching process in the classroom. During the course I used inquiry to look at my beliefs about teaching, understand my student's as individual learners, and adapt lessons using differentiation in instruction. I then created and implemented a literacy unit plan in a kindergarten classroom. The unit objective was for students to understand story elements, how to retell stories and how to make text-to-self connections using books written by Kevin Henkes. This was a great unit for kindergartners because they explored different emotions by making connections with different Kevin Henkes book characters.

TE 803 Professional Roles and Teaching Practice II
Instructor: E. Byker
TE 803 focused on teaching and integrating social studies in the classroom. We learned how to co-plan lessons as we worked with other internship students. An important aspect of this course was learning who your students are and what prior knowledge they possess in order to create and implement appropriate lessons. In this course I created a three week unit of study based on grade level standards. The kindergarten social studies unit focused on families, communities and economic concepts. The highlight of this unit was being able to integrate reading and writing into daily plans. Students demonstrated their learning by creating post cards about living in either the city or the country.

TE 804 Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice II
Instructor: E. Smith
Student work sample from the science unit taught
This course focused on teaching science in the classroom. The goal was to create a science unit using standards with a focus on student assessments. TE 804 worked with the process of inquiry and application. We were encouraged to create lessons that gave students experiences in the classroom which would allow for them to see patterns, make connections and form explanations. Using co-planning with another internship student, we created a three-week kindergarten unit about living and non-living things. We used pre-assessment data to help us plan and implemented various assessments through out the unit. Students worked with a variety of hands-on activities to gain an understanding and make connections between the science concepts taught.

ED 800 Concepts in Educational Inquiry
Instructor: Steven Weiland
This was one of the first courses I took when I began the MAED program. ED 800 required me to evaluate my own beliefs and inquiry in education. Throughout the course I read articles, books and watched movies that allowed me to reflect upon how students grow and learn. I examined the ideas of Vivian Paley, Howard Gardner and E.D. Hirsch to name a few. My final paper showcases how I view educational inquiry through the reflection of teacher experiences.

CEP 842 Instruction in the Inclusive Classroom
Instructor: C. Okolo
CEP 842 allowed me to look into instructional practices that can be used in the general education classroom to help students with mild learning disabilities. While taking this course I was able to use my current teaching placement to focus on helping specific students in science, social studies and mathematics. I worked on differentiating instruction and used the Universal Design for Learning to develop lesson plans for my students. During this course I worked on two major course projects, a unit plan and a professional development workshop.
Unit Plan
For the unit plan I used co-teaching with our special education teacher to deliver instruction about the States of Matter to first grade students of varying ability levels.

Professional Development Workshop
The professional development workshop was a project that I worked on with two other CEP 842 students. We created a three-day PD plan about problem solving in mathematics. The goal of the PD workshop was to give teachers strategies to help teach problem solving to their students. We gave teachers concepts, ideas, and practices that could be used in the classroom. Below you will find our three-day PD plan with rational, objectives, materials and activities along with a PowerPoint presentation about self-regulation.

CEP 820 Teaching K-12 Students Online
Instructors: Michelle Hagerman and Ammon Wilcken

CEP 820 was a wonderful elective course that had two main goals. The first was to examine and learn about online learning and how to bring online learning into the classroom. The second goal was to look at ways all learners can showcase their ideas to the outside world. During this course I looked at the roles of online learners and teachers, different learning systems that can be used to build course websites, communication and collaboration, and assessing student learning. The final course project was a hybrid online learning course I created for my first grade students. The course was used along side classroom teaching in order for students to master the math concepts of addition and subtraction to 10. You can click on the screenshot to view the course as a guest. There you will find a syllabus, information, and content folders with activities I created for my first grade students.
CEP 843 Autism Spectrum Disorders: Characteristics and Educational Implications
Instructor: Dr. Ferreri
This was a course in my concentration area of special education. It provided me with information about the characteristics of children on the Autism Spectrum. We looked at theories and research about the cause, rates, and impact of Autism Spectrum Disorders on families and communities. During the course I participated in autism internet modules, conducted a case study on a student with ASD, designed a transition plan for that student, and wrote a book review about The boy who loved windows: opening the heart and mind of a child threatened with autism. Throughout the course I also read and reviewed language research articles and created a presentation about the findings. Below you will find a copy of my case study, book review and language research presentation.

TE 831 Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
Instructor: C. Clara
Click above to view First Grade Wild West Rules
TE 831 was a course that helped me develop different ways of teaching subject matter using technology. I used the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical and Content Theory Knowledge) and NETS*T (National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers) to evaluate different forms of technology for tools in teaching subject matter. During the course I worked with tools such as Go!Animate and MyStorybook to create digital stories. As a final assignment I learned how to create a voicethread, where I discussed how TPACK helped me investigate technology. If you click on the Go!Animate picture you can view a cartoon I created to teach my first grade class our classroom rules. Also, please feel free to look at my final reflection paper about re-purposing technology.

CEP 801A Consultation and Collaboration in Special Education
Instructor: Becca Cutler
This my final course in my concentration area of special education. CEP 801A focused on decision-making, problem-solving, and collaboration in order to teach students with disabilities. We examined effective ways to collaborate with co-workers, students and parents. Throughout the course we worked on larger projects such as a functional behavioral plan (FBA). My FBA looked at a first grade student with a problem behavior. I conducted observations, collected data, developed a hypothesis, and created and implemented an intervention plan for this student. I also created an implemented a co-teaching lesson using evidence-based teaching practices. Below you will find my FBA interview and project plan.

ED 870 Capstone Portfolio Course
Instructors: Dr. Matthew Koehler, William Cain and Penny Thompson
ED 870 was my final course in the MAED program. This course allowed me to reflect back on the path I took to complete my Masters of Arts and Education. During this course I followed modules that guided me through the process of reflection and the creation of the online portfolio. This was an interactive course that allowed me to give and receive feedback from peers. This was the final course I took in the MAED program and showcases my hard work that has taken place over the past two years.
